On Saturday 17th October, the Lady Soames, Winston Churchill's last living daughter, visited the College 50 years ago to the
day that Sir Winston visited the site which would be Churchill College. The Lady Soames at the young age of 87, planted a
Mulberry tree in the shadow of her Father's oak on the Jock Colville Lawn. This was done in the presence of the three surviving
Masters: Sir William Hawthorne, Lord Broers and Sir John Boyd, the Master, founding Fellows and Students, current College
Members and members of the public and press.
It was a wonderful occasion which was truly a historic event. The spade used by Sir Winston was also present accompanied by
two chaperones from Chartwell and was used by The Lady Soames with energy and vigour. The spade even had its own seat at the
private lunch following the event! Caroline Lloyd-Evans (wife of Meredith Lloyd-Evans U67) attended who had been present as
a little girl at the original tree-planting in 1959.
The Lady Soames said before the event: 'It makes me very happy and proud that today I shall be literally following in my father's
footsteps in planting a tree in the grounds of Churchill College.' She then went on to say: 'I find it moving that as an elder
statesman in the 1950s my father grasped the realities of the atomic age and was the founder of this major institution devoted
to the advancement of science and technology.'
