50th Anniversary Summer Ball & Auction

50th Summer Ball 2010

The Event

On Saturday 10 July 2010 Churchill College will host its 50th Anniversary Summer Ball. We would be delighted if you were able to join us in our celebrations for a night of retro glamour.

The evening will begin with a champagne reception on the lawn by the iconic Barbara Hepworth sculpture, followed by a gala dinner in the best 1960s fashion with a menu suggested by well-known food critic and chef, Prue Leith. During dinner a charity auction will take place with the chance to bid for some unique and unusual lots.

The evening’s entertainment continues in the grand marquee which will include a live band, DJ, casino and special guest appearance.

All proceeds from the 50th Anniversary Summer Ball will go towards the 50th Anniversary Appeal to raise money for new student accommodation and direct academic support, including student bursaries, Fellowships and Scholarships.

We very much hope you will be able to join us in our celebrations at what promises to be a wonderful event.

WSC Letter

Letter of response to good wishes sent to Sir Winston Churchill on the occasion of his ninetieth birthday

This letter was sent in response to a letter of good wishes sent by Churchill College undergraduate, Jocelyn Waller, on the occasion of Sir Winston’s ninetieth birthday in 1964. It is almost certainly a clever facsimile of his signature. Churchill was now too frail to reply to every well-wisher, and thus it was the habit of his Private Office to have him sign a note of thanks, which was then photographically reproduced and printed on his headed paper. The Churchill Archives Centre would describe this as “an original facsimile" and as an important reminder of the regard in which our Founder was held in his final few months.

Garanfada House, Ireland

One week in Garanfada House, County Tipperary, Ireland (Sleeps 8)

Garanfada House, set in 5 acres of grounds, overlooks Lough Derg, the largest and southernmost of the lakes (loughs) that the River Shannon flows through on its passage to the sea. It is 7 miles from the town of Nenagh, North Tipperary, 2 miles from the lakeside village of Dromineer, 110 miles from Dublin and 35 miles from Shannon Airport.

It has a magnificent view north westwards over Lough Derg to a backdrop of the Clare hills. It has as peaceful a setting as you could possibly get, virtually at the end of a country road. The amenities of Lough Derg (boating, fishing, sailing) are at your doorstep. The Lough Derg walk around the perimeters of the lake is at the bottom of the driveway. Local villages have traditional Irish pubs and restaurants. All in all it’s a wonderful location to get away from it all.
