Paula Halson, Author of 'Flying Roast Ducks' 25 Oct 2012 Churchill College launches a book on Sir Hermann Bondi by Paula Halson
On Wednesday 24 October, the College launched 'Flying Roast Ducks: Recollections of Sir Hermann Bondi 1983-2005' by the Registrar and HR Bursar, Paula Halson at the Mill Road Lecture Rooms in conjunction with the Festival of Ideas.

Paula Halson writes:

"Sir Hermann's great scientific and other achievements are a matter for public record, from the Steady State Theory, his work as Chief Scientific Adviser in the Departments of Defence and Energy, to his active interest in humanism and in tertiary education. But it was the discovery of some fascinating documents in his College room following his death in 2005 that were to form the catalyst for my writing. I simply didn't want these documents to be transferred to the safety of the Churchill Archives Centre without some form of recognition, and what I particularly wanted to convey was the human side of this remarkable man, that, in my capacity as his personal secretary from 1988-1990, I had been fortunate enough to experience."

The book is now available to purchase from the College at http://www.churchillians.net/contact/page?sp=126

The College is saddened to report the death of Dr Sean Barrett (U95, G99) who read Natural Sciences at Churchill College.

Dr Barrett was a Royal Society University Research Fellow in the Department of Physics at Imperial College London.

Statement from family

"Sean was a brilliant mind, and a brilliant man. Anyone who had the pleasure to meet him in physics and beyond would tell you that. He was a charismatic man who had the rare gift to light up any room. He is a loss to science, and to life. He was cut short in his prime. Rightly, his family, friends and his colleagues whom he leaves behind are devastated. We would appreciate the time and space to grieve Sean's passing."

Statement from Imperial College London

"It is with great sadness the we have learnt of the death of Dr Sean Barrett. Sean was an outstanding physicist, whose research was furthering our understanding of Quantum Physics and Quantum Computing. His loss will be greatly felt by the scientific community.

Churchill, Clare, King’s and Lucy Cavendish present:

‘1972 Cambridge: A Celebration of the Admission of Female Undergraduates’

Two very special collaborative events to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Admission of Female Undergraduates.

1972 was a significant year in the history of the University of Cambridge. Churchill, Clare, King’s and Lucy Cavendish Colleges pioneered the admission of female undergraduates in 1972.

Churchill, Clare and King’s Colleges were the first all-male Colleges to accept female students and Lucy Cavendish, a Graduate College at that time, accepted their first intake of female undergraduates over the age of 21.

You are cordially invited to join in with our celebrations! All Alumni and Past Fellows who matriculated in 1972 until the present (from the four Colleges) are welcome to attend.

For further details about this exciting collaboration and information on how to book for our first event, please visit http://www.1972cambridge.co.uk.
